The ADHD Tax Is Real (And It Has Nothing to Do With How Smart You Are)
You know the feeling.
You open your bank app and there’s a late fee on a bill you completely intended to pay. Or you buy shampoo because you couldn’t remember if you had any, and get home to find two bottles under the sink. Or you pay for a subscription you forgot existed, for the third month in a row.
That’s not irresponsibility. That’s the ADHD tax.
It’s the hidden surcharge on having a brain that’s genuinely great at some things and genuinely bad at others. Like maintaining awareness of low-stakes recurring tasks. Like remembering where you put something you just had. Like doing the thing on Tuesday that you remembered on Sunday.
It shows up in a lot of places:
- Late fees and overdrafts from bills that never made it to “urgent” in your brain
- Duplicate purchases because your mental inventory doesn’t update in real time
- Expired groceries because the plan you made Monday didn’t survive Wednesday
- Delivery fees on dinners you ordered because cooking just wasn’t happening that night
- Replacement items for things that aren’t lost, they’re just somewhere
And then there’s the secondary tax. The mental energy you spend feeling bad about all of it. The spiral of I should have caught this that eats up the afternoon you were going to use to get ahead of something else.
Nobody talks about that part enough. Your brain doesn’t track low-urgency recurring tasks the same way neurotypical brains do. That’s not a character flaw and it’s not an excuse. It’s just how your brain is built, and knowing that is where you start building something that actually works for you.
Trying harder doesn’t fix the ADHD tax. A system that catches what your brain drops does. One that accounts for the fact that your energy and attention look different from day to day, and builds that reality in instead of ignoring it.
That’s what the Spark System is for, if you want somewhere to start today. And later this summer, the ADHD Tax Audit is coming to the shop: a dedicated tool for finding exactly where the tax is hitting you hardest and what to do about it.
You didn’t earn the tax by being careless. You just didn’t have the right tools yet.
